A History of Advocacy

Nathan, a dedicated attorney and advocate, was born and raised in the Tampa Bay area. His parents, both esteemed biochemists, significantly shaped his understanding and values. They met while pursuing their master's and PhDs in biochemistry, setting a foundation of academic excellence and commitment to service. Nathan's father, a WWII Army veteran, was a research biochemist for the USDA, focusing on citrus research. While other kids had dads with boats or classic cars, Nathan's father had a small farm with cattle and citrus, including his favorite, ruby red grapefruit. Nathan fondly recalls weekends spent farming, fishing in the lake, visiting other farmers, or enjoying church BBQs. His mother was a pioneer, earning an MD after her PhD and becoming an OB/GYN at a time when few women entered the field. She was the first female physician on staff at their large regional hospital, practicing before and after Roe v. Wade. Her stories about women's healthcare access before and after Roe v. Wade deeply influenced Nathan's understanding of healthcare and justice.
